If you are seriously considering modeling and are going to Shoot with other photographers TFP, usually you will doing your own make-up (Poor Decision) We (us Photographers) know that you have been doing your own make-up for years, but this is a different kind of make-up, camera make-up, very drastic and very exagerated, because a camera loses definition, you must do your make-up accordingly.
If you must do your own make-up, understand that you must understand a few rules:
Rule #1. You won't like what you see in the mirror. Who Cares! Its what the camera sees that is most important. If you don't understand this, STOP and read it again, if you still don't understand this, email me and ask.
Rule #2. See Rule #1
Rule #3.Make-up bought at the discount counter at Wal-Mart is just as good as the expensive makeup at Dillard's!
So, lets move on to practice. Set aside a good hour for this, you will need a digital camera with flash. Flash outside in daylight too.
Step 1 Foundation. As good as your skin is, cover it up. Shiny skin patches in photographs look bad and amateur. Cover it well with a good color that matches your skin. remember as the summer rays beat upon us, it will darken your skin, make sure you keep foundation that matches your skin. Cover everywhere.
Step 2 Eyelashes. Make them Huge. Even false eyelashes are great. The bigger the better, to a point. for now, just build yourself a nice lash.
Step 3 Lips. This time for practice. one color.... Bright Hooker red lipstick that is as wet as you can make it. The lipstick you put on for going out, is NOT going to shoot well. If you like a particular shade of pink or purple, whatever, you need to make it darker by 3 shades, for it to show up well on camera. for practice, try the good old fashioned RED lipstick. The lipstick you use should be as dark or darker than your eyebrow, in tone, not color. In the future, when modeling for a purpose, a make-up artist will apply the necessary shades for the shoot. Not you, not now.
Step 4 Take a picture.... Look at the picture, see how the camera likes it. You should look like someone who really doesn't have make-up on. A very natural and clean look. If it doesn't start over.
Step 5 Eye Shadow. Before you go straight to DARK, what are you wearing? Find a shade that is a little lighter than what you are wearing. Take a picture, see how you look?
Step 6 Blush. Just a shade or two darker than normal. just a small brushing on each cheek. Take a picture and add more. Take a picture and add more. Find out how much it takes to go too far.
Step 7 Review your photos, see how you look along the way. make notes to yourself about what you liked and didn't like. Then experiment a little bit more, you can try all kinds of little tricks, but don't rely on what you see in the mirror.
